Big God

By Britt Merrick

What Happens When We Trust Him

Faith is trust. It is a confidence in the power and goodness of God that leads us to make good decisions and allows us to surrender our lives to Him. As we strive to mature spiritually and lead lives pleasing to God, we all want more faith. Hebrews 6:12 says that we are to be “imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” One of the best ways to grow in faith is to imitate the lives of people who have shown great faith. Hebrews 11 guides us through the lives of men and women – like Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, David and others – who have done just that. Real people with real lives and real problems, who had faith in a great God and trusted Him at pivotal moments in their lives. By drawing on some of the greatest lives of faith in the Bible, readers will come to see that God was worthy of these men’s and women’s trust and faith during biblical times in the same way that He is worthy of ours today.

Britt Merrick was born and raised near Santa Barbara, CA in a little town on the beach named Carpinteria. He grew up entrenched in the surf industry, working for his parents’ business Channel Islands Surfboards.  Starting by sweeping out the shaping rooms, soon he was making surfboards along side his father (Al Merrick) at the factory for some of the best surfers in the world. Britt was also handling the famous company’s advertising, marketing, and amateur surf team.  Although he received Jesus as a young child, Britt had never known what it was to walk with Him.  He had both feet in the world, using drugs, alcohol, and getting into trouble.  In his early twenties, Britt was introduced to the transforming power of the Word of God, and thus began a new life.  Shortly after re-committing his life to the Lord, with a fresh fire for the Truth, Britt began to teach bible studies at his parents’ home for the surfer kids in Carpinteria. These bible studies eventually led to Britt teaching and preaching at a Friday night college ministry at a local church in Santa Barbara. In the fall of 2003, sensing a further call to ministry, Britt laid aside Channel Islands and he and his wife along with some close friends started a church called Reality in his hometown of Carpinteria. Since that time the Reality family has grown to include churches in Ventura, Los Angeles, Stockton, San Francisco, and London, England. Reality is focused on biblical faithfulness, community transformation, church birthing, and equipping the next generation of leaders. Britt continues to pastor full time and lives with his wife Kate, and their two children in Carpinteria.

How big is your God when times are tough, the mission impossible and the knees are weak? Big God is a new book by Britt Merrick on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible, Hebrews 11. "We need a bigger picture of the supremacy of Christ, the glory of Christ and the mission of Christ, and our lives should be subsumed by and submitted to Him." pg. 219 When your heart is overwhelmed with the worst possible news about life and death you better know some Bible, you better know Jesus. The central message of this book and why its worth reading in Britt's own words: "What do you do as a Christian when the doctor tells you that your five-year-old has cancer? How do you deal with that? If you're a Christian, your mind goes to Jesus." pg. 18. This book helps you along that path by exploring nine key elements of faith from Hebrews chapter eleven.
Another book about God and faith seemed a bit of a stretch for me with all the thousands of titles written on the subject in the last decade alone, not to mention antiquity. Britt disarms those thoughts as soon as you read the introduction and sense that this man has been battle tested with Jesus, through the Scriptures, anchoring this man's soul in very rough seas. The easy to read and understand exposition of the great faith chapter, Hebrews 11 was very well done and laid out. I wish for scholarship sake that he would have been defined the origin of faith itself as coming from God Himself as a gift and actual result of regeneration. (Rom. 10:17, Eph. 2:8-10, Titus 3:3-8)
Regardless, I was moved closer to Christ and encouraged to press on with the Gospel message and that is the benchmark for a book worth reading and recommending. You will be impressed, as was I, by his very high view of the Scriptures, Christ and the glory of God. The Solas of the reformation ring true and bright with this one. Britt, thank you for your work on this. You can warm yourself by my theological fire anytime.

Leading and Following as an Ordinary Radical Followers of Christ yearn to see the world changed in compassionate, positive, effective ways. As prophetic voices, Shane Claiborne and John Perkins lead the way in this move to be the hands, feet and heart of Jesus. One is young; the other is decades older. One is a self-proclaimed reformed redneck who grew up in the hills of Tennessee and now lives in inner-city Philadelphia; the other is an African-American civil rights leader who was almost beaten to death by police in Mississippi, and went on to found a reconciliation movement and counsel three American presidents. Claiborne and Perkins draw on more than a century of combined following and learning, activating and leading. Together they craft a timely message for ordinary people willing to take radical steps to see real change happen. They start with Moses as a model and proceed to re-imagine the roles of leading and following in a world desperate for freedom.

    God of This City

The popular worship song “God of This City” was written by Aaron Boyd, lead singer of Bluetree, while they were on a mission trip to Thailand. Near the end of a gig in a bar beneath a brothel in one of the world’s sex-trade capitals, Aaron began to sing to the city that “greater things have yet to come / greater things are still to be done in this city.” Within a few days, the full lyrics had emerged; within a few months, the song was ringing in Bluetree’s hometown of Belfast, where the promise of “greater things” is starting to bear fruit. “God of This City” eventually became the anthem of the Passion international worship conferences, but there is more to the song than an inspiring melody and unusual history. In God of This City, the book, Aaron Boyd unpacks the lyrics of the song, and along the way shares his thoughts on the state of the Church, the persistent injustice in the world and the biblical mandate to right the wrongs done to our global neighbors. Many local churches and ministries have taken “God of This City” as a rallying cry for their own communities, and the book is a further challenge for the Body of Christ to be an agent of His change—living lives of worship marked by actions of justice in a world longing for greater things.
